Steelers Nation, Let's ride
Russell Wilson is a Pittsburgh Steeler. Let's talk about that.
It was my intention to try and refrain from Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback talk until they actually did something with the position. Not because I didn’t have any opinions or thoughts on it, or an interest in it, but because there are only so many ways you can say “Kenny Pickett probably isn’t the answer” without repeating yourself. It got boring having the same argument and discussion over and over and over and over again. Pickett. Rudolph. Rudolph. Pickett. I didn’t care anymore! Call me when they do something.
Well, the Steelers actually did something by agreeing to a one-year deal with Russell Wilson on Sunday night.
And buddy, I am all in on this.
Not because I think he is going to lead the Steelers to the Super Bowl.
Because he’s probably not. In fact, I’m pretty certain he is not.
I don’t think this changes things THAT much. I don’t know what he has left in the tank. I think it is far more realistic to think he is cooked than that he is going to come in here and cook.
But it’s something different.
It’s taking a chance and trying to get better at a position where you absolutely need to get better to have even a chance to compete. There is no way that you could go into the 2024 season and try to convince people that you are serious about winning and trot out the same quarterback room that failed the past two seasons (or three seasons if we are being completely and fully honest here). You couldn’t do it. If you did do that, then you would have had to acknowledge that you are still in a “find out” phase and seeing what you have and not actually concerned with winning. The Steelers are never going to admit to that. They always like to think of themselves as contenders whether they actually are or not. And for that to have even the slightest chance of passing the laugh test they had to do something different at quarterback.
They did. It is also a move that speaks volumes about what they actually think about Pickett and his future.
