There is still a really good NHL free agent that should be signed
UPDATE: Well, it looks like the Colorado Avalanche listened to me.
Most of the NHL’s free agency crop has already been picked over, and with training camps just around the corner we are into Professional Tryout territory. But there is still one really intriguing name out there that has not been signed, and it is former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evan Rodrigues.
Quite honestly, it is kind of baffling he has not been signed yet.
For starters, he is coming off a career year with the Penguins that saw him score 19 goals and 43 total points in 82 games, play strong defense, and have the versatility to play several different roles on multiple different lines throughout the lineup.
During the first half of the season he was one of the Penguins’ most important players and helped get them through some brutal injuries.
Do I expect him to repeat those exact numbers? No. Would I expect him to get a significant contract? Also no. But he brings some real value and is probably more useful than a lot of the players that have received more significant contracts in free agency.
The underlying numbers paint an especially promising picture.
