Pirates Progress Report No. 6: Just finish strong and make progress
Checking in with the local baseball team….
At this point we know where the 2023 Pittsburgh Pirates season is going. Unless something completely unforeseen happens over the next month-and-a-half, they are going to finish with another losing record and potentially on exceed 90 losses again.
They sold off veterans at the trade deadline, have a lineup and pitching staff that is loaded with rookies, and are clearly playing for the future.
Overall, none of this is really unexpected from what our preseason expectations were.
But the manner in which they arrived at this point IS a little disappointing.
They gave us some early season hope with a 20-8 start, and then completely fell apart in a Pirates-like manner.
The weird thing is, after a mid-season slide that was borderline unwatchable at times they have started to play a little better with young players on the roster. They have won 11 of their past 20 games entering play on Friday, and it is a number that could have easily been higher with some better relief pitching. If you squint really hard, you can kind of see some hope for the young roster.
