Oh good, more wide receiver trade talk
Just what we all wanted. Plus a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers a quarter of the way through the 2024 NFL season.
Here we go again.
The Pittsburgh Steelers desperately need another wide receiver. This is a fact that has been obvious from the moment they traded Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers over the summer, and it has only become more obvious now that they are a quarter of the way through the 2024 season.
George Pickens is supremely talented, but also supremely frustrating.
Calvin Austin makes some plays, but he is not a No. 2 right now on a contending team.
Van Jefferson and Scottie Miller are absolute JAGs (Just A Guy).
Roman Wilson is intriguing, but the guy can not get on the field, and even if he does, I am not expecting a third-round pick to immediately step in and make a huge impact.
The rest of the team is good enough to compete, but the lack of potential impact talent after Pickens is a big obstacle in being a serious contender.
They tried to fill that void in the offseason by putting all of their eggs into the Brandon Aiyuk basket, and the courtship of him ended up being one of the most maddening and frustrating stories to follow. It was close. It was imminent. It was happening. No, wait, it is not happening, but it still could! Here is what it would cost, here is what he costs, here is how they could do it, here is why it will still happening. It was all just a constant sledgehammer of rumors and scoops beating you over the head until you just started to wish that he would re-sign in San Francisco and just end the madness.
Then that is exactly what he did.
Are you ready for round two of that? Because it is here, and this time it is in the form of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams.
He wants a trade, the Raiders are opening to accommodating that request and, you guessed it, the Steelers are interested.
It is, admittedly, an intriguing thought. Adams has been one of the best wide receivers of his era and he would fill an absolutely massive need. But I can not do the 24/7 soap opera and rumor mill again. I can not do it. I will not do it. I will just say this — the idea of Adams does not hype me up as much as Aiyuk did, mainly because Adams is 31 years old, is already dealing with an injury this season, will be very expensive and I am quite certain he has already played his best football for somebody else.
Aiyuk was so intriguing because he is playing his best football RIGHT NOW. This is his peak. This is when he is, in theory, at the absolute top of his game and height of his powers and would still have a few top years ahead of him. I do not know what Adams has left in the tank, and for the compensation and money it would cost I have some concerns.
I am not saying I am opposed to it.
I am not saying they should not be interested.
I am also not saying I would be mad if they did it. Because, my goodness, look at that wide receiver depth chart.
I am just saying I have a little more uncertainty about it.
Now let us focus on the players that actually are Pittsburgh Steelers at the moment.
