Is Team USA going to botch its Olympic roster?
It might. It always does.
NHL players are returning to the Olympics this year for the first time since the 2014 Sochi games, and that is an exciting development. Mostly because best-on-best hockey tournaments are fun, and we have not really had a truly good one in a decade. The 4 Nations Face-Off this past season was a nice appetizer, but it only featured four teams. We need more. We are going to get more.
It is also especially exciting if you are a Team USA fan because their current talent pool is as deep as it has ever been and has significantly closed the gap with Canada. Just simply competing with the Canadians and the other top teams in the world shouldn’t just be a hope or an ideal outcome. It should be an expectation. Winning the whole thing should not be out of the question. It should be realistic and within reach.
There is just one problem that is lurking with Team USA.
They’re going to screw this up.
Not necessarily on the ice, but in the board room where they actually pick the roster.
You know they are going to screw it up because, 1) They always screw it up, and 2) General manager Bill Guerin is already dropping hints as to how he is going to screw it up.
Let’s talk about it.
